Video Marketing – Anatomy Of A Successful Affiliate Campaign

So its been a while since my last post, due to a variety of reasons which I won’t go into in great detail, but basically the upshot is I have managed to lose a couple of months and fail in my commitment to update here regularly!! But nevertheless I am now back and more determined than ever, so stay tuned for some great content that I have coming your way…

Today I want to talk about the power of video marketing and selling affiliate products through popular video sharing sites such as YouTube (being the main one), Metacafe, Break, Daily Motion etc.
Not a new concept I know, but a very powerful one that is often overlooked or misunderestimated.

Perhaps the best example I have ever seen of an affiliate promo is the “Guitar” video on YouTube. This already popular video was also picked up by E4 show Rude Tube, presented by Alex Zane, and became one of its top featured videos (incidentally no doubt driving further traffic to it!). You can see the video itself below

So why is this fairly simple video such a good example of affiliate marketing, and how is it being used as such?

Well the reason is two-fold: to date this video has had no less than 76,747,771 views!!!! (yes thats almost 77M views – some traffic!!) and secondly in the description box it has a link and a simple statement “I learned to play guitar with GuitarMasterPro.net. Practice, Practice, Practice and get a copy of Guitar Master Pro, that’s how I did it! Good Luck!”

Unsurprisingly the link accompanying the statement goes to the Guitar Master Pro product (or as now, the updated Guitar Superstars program) which is a product costing a basic $69 with a 60% affiliate commission ($41.40) before any up/downsells.

Given what they have seen in the video, do you think that some of the viewers would be interested in such a product which could teach them to play like that?? Well of course they would….. so you can see the power of this campaign.

The numbers are absolutely mind boggling, just think that if it has a 1% conversion rate from the video, then thats 767,478 visitors clicking the affiliate link. Assuming the conversion rate of the page is only a low 1% then thats 7,675 people who purchase the product which generates a commission of $317,745!!

Not a bad return for posting one video I think!! Thats also assuming that the poster is not the product vendor (as with no affiliates to pay he would generate an additional $211,830 giving a total of $529,575), ignoring any up/downsells (available at $197 and $47) and of course assuming very low conversion rates of only 1% from both YouTube visitors and sales page.
In all reality this was probably easily a $Million Dollar campaign for that marketer!!

So I think you can see the power of video marketing – its certainly something I will be looking to harness in the coming months, and I will chart my progress further on this blog.

So what are the key elements you need for a successful campaign?

  • Interesting appealing content
  • Topical content – latest trends, interests, fashions
  • A quality, useful product to provide or promote
  • Swift and varied distribution network (speed is often the key to keep ahead of the game)

Obviously you will need to research your chosen niche(s) to ascertain whether they are worthwhile entering and if they have active customers who will spend.
Also you will need to consider whether you want to record your video yourself (starring you or your friends!) or whether you want to make a video from other material, such as a compilation of “best of…” (respecting copyrights of course) – either can be successful for you and I will be experimenting with both.

Finally you need to distribute your content….A handy resource that I found for rating video sharing sites and their features and functionality can be found here at Top Ten reviews, this should give you an idea of where you can post your content as a starting point…

Hope this helps give you an idea or opens up a new avenue for your business, let me know your thoughts or any successes in the comments below.

Until next time,

Tom

    Hey Tom,

I know a few people use TubeMogul for video distribution to great effect.

I must admit I have not fully utilized the power of you tube or video marketing and your post has inspired me to take more action.

Sally. A good point – I have heard good things about Tube Mogul (also Maria Andros speaks highly of Traffic Geyser but thats a paid service which isn't the cheapest) and need to leverage video much better. Whilst I'm not saying its easy to get the kind of numbers I illustrate in the article it certainly goes to show how effective video marketing can be (also can help with your SEO and rankings). I'll be taking more action and posting my tips and techniques along the way. Speak soon

Lesley. Thanks for stopping by. The key is to take action – get in front of that camera and get recording, it may take a few takes the first time but you will get there in the end and grow in confidence. You could always try a powerpoint presentation and read the key points if you are nervous initially. Just an idea… Look forward to seeing your results, all the best

    Hi Tom

Video marketing is great and it amazing how many views some videos receive.

A little about me – My name is Sue McDonald and I am a student of Mark Terrell and I am actually going through the course a second time – by invitation. I love it and know if I do all he says, I will be successful. I am Australian but the US is my second home as I have family there and visit quite often. This is why I started Internet Marketing so I can travel whenever I want and have the money to do what I want.

Well I hope you are doing well and you become very successful. I would love you to come visit my blog and leave a comment. http://sue-mcdonald.com

    Kind regards

Thanks for stopping by – seeing a few of Mark's students over here – putting some of us other guys to shame with your activity and enthusiasm!! Great to build a wider network with you guys and those with Dean Holland and John Thornhill too. I look forward to seeing what you share and the feedback from what Mark is teaching – we can get quite a good community developing between all us students and inspire and assist each other to ongoing success. Hi, Tom,

WOW! I am looking forward to using video on my blog. Do you have any specific newbie tips for Youtube? Specifically, do you know how or where I could find info on using a pre-made video but personalizing it with my info?

Thanks for inspiring me to use video!

      18/08/2010

Thanks for stopping by and sharing. In terms of starting out I would monitor the hot trends, you can search You Tube itself (its pretty much the second search engine after Google), Yahoo Buzz or Google Trends to find topical red hot topics and niches. Then you can put together your video using a collection of images as a slideshow, personalised with your link on the video (also don't forget to put your link in that all important resource box too!). Or alternatively you can create a compilation (like a "best of") of clips from other videos – just check out your favourite sports team or player and you will no doubt find loads of "best of XYZ" or "Top 10 Goals/Dunks/Home Runs/Touchdowns/Crashes by XYZ" which are similar. Good luck – let me know how you get on!! Tom

    Hello Tom,

Video marketing indeed is one very overlook marketing method. I have not get into it just yet. Somehow, I felt that the learning curve to really start one is steep for me. As I am not really a "Native English Speaker" ,I am afraid I may not be the "natural charm" as compare for those that don't have a accent in their language. I think may need to go toe the compilation approach if I ever start doing videos.

Anyway, It is really refreshing to have a Non-IM case study and example for Video Marketing you shared here. I must say you did stir up some fire for me to really get my hand greasy into video soon, after I launch my true calling product in the next couple of days.

    Thanks for sharing.

      Jason

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I wouldn't worry too much about not being a native speaker as after all in the video featured is there any speaking!? You can always outsource the production or voice over if needs be and you dont always need to have spoken words in your videos don't forget! Good luck with your launch – let me know what you have coming out as woi be interested in taking a look…. Speak soon, Tom

Hi Tom, very powerful point you are making here. I have never tried video marketing although I have made a few personal videos using Animoto that I have been very happy with. I just bought Camtasia so need to get on with learning how to use it!

    Enjoy the journey.

Mandy. Thanks for stopping by – Animoto is quite a favourite of people starting with video online. I've got Camtasia Studio and its a great piece of software (even if I am still a novice) – I'm sure you will find its greatly beneficial in your video marketing efforts and I look forward to seeing the results. Hi Tom,

WOW – what a video, I actually watched (listened ) to the whole thing!!

It really is a great example of some viral advertising with video!

I know some of my videos have brought me sales, and they're not the best videos in the world by any means… so I do believe that you have a point about just getting something out there!

After watching that – I know I should be making more videos!

Cheers for an informative AND entertaining post :)

And have fun in the 100 blog challenge ;)

    16/08/2010

Hi Tom, affiliate marketing or not videos are a great way to get business. Video's are more effective than ads. I will be getting in doing videos soon. Thanks for the review resource. Terry Conti

    • Tomharvey

      17/08/2010

Terry. Thanks for stopping by my friend, as you rightly say videos are key to driving traffic and business online and with the distribution channels and platforms they can get seen by a wide target audience very quickly. More importantly they offer something to people and if they are interested they can take it further which delivers more value than a static ad or flashing banner. To our success, Tom

    • Tomharvey

      18/08/2010

      Terry

So true my friend, videos can get some great free traffic for your offer/product/business and are a fantastic way of getting your brand and message out there. The viewing and exposure figures, particularly through You Tube, really are phenomenal putting you in front of a global audience. All the best with your endeavours, Tom

  • Noelle

    17/08/2010

I've wanted to get into video marketing for quite a while now, and this post just reminded me why. One of my biggest fears has been worried about having the ability to produce a high enough quality video, but I think I've been looking at it wrong. It can be extremely simple, as long as the message of the video is clear and compelling.
Need to get on this for sure!

    • Tomharvey

      17/08/2010

Noelle, thanks for your visit and input. As you say sometimes its better to get something out there than to overly focus on the quality as after all we cant get everything perfect every time!! The key is taking action and delivering value in a clear compelling way. All the best with your efforts, Tom

    Hi Tom,
Picked up your contact from Jacinta's Challenge!!
However, I really need a boot up the backside, and your post should help me focus – it's obvious that a well selected video can catapult a campaign to a pretty good level – so I really need to fit one in as a test and then launch forth with another 4 or 5 to get some positive ROI moving again!!
Thanks for the tip – and the virtual Boot Up The Backside!!
    John O'York

    • Tomharvey

      17/08/2010

John, thanks for stopping by and glad I could help you focus!! Its amazing what a good video can do to catapault you to success and skyrocket your earnings, just need to take action!! As you rightly say, best to get started with one to test and keep pushing forward from there. All the best, Tom

    18/08/2010

The video was interesting Tom, 8) it reminded me of my first 'information product' purchase – 'Bert Weedon's learn to play the guitar in a day". I bought the sheet music for Albatross by Fleetwood Mac, but could only play '3 blind mice' on one string of my guitar. :-)

Video is a future project for me, after a long list of other skills to master.
Good luck with the 100 comment challenge Tom.

      John, thanks for stopping by and glad to make your acquaintance. Thats more than I can play so I guess your ahead of the game there!! ( ;

I know where you're coming from – when you start out there is so muchinfo out there and stuff to learn and try and master.. the key is to actually not get caught up in the learning and to make sure you keep taking action and learn as you go – something I've been guilty of neglecting myself but will be changing!! All the best, Tom

Hi Tom, good to see you back in the seat.

This is a fantastic example of the power of video marketing, especially when combined with an affiliate link, like you pointed out Just 1% gives an excellent return for your time.

I've created a few videos of my own, but not with this kind of result. It is definitely something that i will be following up on.

Great post Tom, especially for the 100 blog comment challenge. Best of luck with it mate.

    R&R, Barry

    • Tomharvey

      18/08/2010

Barry. Thanks for stopping by and your thoughts. I was blown away when I saw this video on TV and then looked at it on the internet and realised it was perhaps one of the best (most lucky!?) examples of affiliate marketing around. The numbers really are mind blowing as in all reality the conversion rates were probably much better than the 1% I used in the example – that is one hell of a return for a free video – real life changing stuff! Keep at it, I'm sure that even getting a fraction of this success with your videos will be very lucrative (for an inexpensive or free method!). Look forward to following your success and speak soon, Tom

Tom, I have to agree that this is a very effective means of getting a message to a large audience. Not only that but if it is tagged with a product or affiliate link, it is surely one of the best ways of making some money in return for the effort expended. Thanks for putting together this post as I had not seriously considered video as part of my marketing strategy. Now, having seen the guitar "hero", I am convinced it is a channel I need to turn on. Michael.

      23/08/2010

Michael. Thanks for stopping by and your thoughts. Video is indeed a very powerful way of getting a message across both in terms of cost and effort. The traffic through video sites (free!) is massive and just getting a small proportion of that can make a massive difference to you, your business and your products.

I think video is a valuable asset and channel for any business, look forward to seeing your success, Tom

Great post Tom. Of course you can't be sure that all the people who viewed the video clicked on the link but it would be a nice little earner for the guy if they did.

I had a very short video made of one of my articles that does well in sending the viewers to my squeeze page so I know it works. Must do another!

    • Tomharvey

      23/08/2010

Sandy, thanks for the visit and your thoughts. Indeed thats true, thats why in the example I used a low 1% assumption (in reality a lot of this traffic is highly targeted to guitar players/enthusiasts/hobbyists so will likely be much higher) – even working off that given the views 1% is all you need to do very very well! Great to hear your success with video too – its a massive market that I need to get into properly in order to reap rewards. Would love to hear more about what you're doing….. speak soon, Tom

I really need to learn how to You Tube. So much going on there.

So what is this intedsedebate it says I am logged into? Never heard of it. Never signed up for it for all I know.

Also, the audio on the top of the post is cool. What made you put that up there? I am curious of your thoughts is all.

Thanks for this awesome show of some great affiliate marketing. I appreciate it!

      25/08/2010

      Lisa

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. One of the beauties of the internet is that you can learn a skill and make money from it at the same time – I love it! The power of video marketing can be unleashed on pretty much any product or niche and is so powerful.

Intensedebate is a blog comments system that I use, was recommended by another blogger, and it works as a mini-blogging platform. I quite like it and it integrates well with the blog and offers a number of built in features which are good. The audio is another recommended plugin, I think its good as adds another type of content that I can syndicate from my blog – you can distribute audio feeds to provide content and links back!

Ill be doing a post on the plugins I use in the future so keep your eyes peeled!! All the best, Tom

Thanks for stopping by, have returned the visit already! Hope Mark's coaching is going well and you are progressing, I see a number of his students over here and on my travels – you really are an active motivated bunch and will succeed if you carry on taking positive action. You really should get into video alongside your other marketing, I'm just starting myself but can already see the power!! To our success,

Mike. Have to admit its a great sales pitch/call to action! Would imagine the conversion numbers are significantly higher than indicated as the example. Think will inspire a number of people to get into video marketing. All the best, Tom

    Hey Tom,

Cool to see you posting again!!

Inspirational post here to make more of video marketing, something I really don't do…haven't event got round to optimising any you tube videos yet!

Good to see the potential numbers, although we're not likely to hit those sorts of views every time ;-) it really shows the potential.

    Cheers!

    Rob :-D

p.s. how do you do/what's the plugin that includes the subscribe to + dropdown menu below the comment box! V. cool!!

      Rob

Great to hear from you again – trust you're going well and will stop by your blog and see what you've been up to. Thanks for your thoughts, I'm the same in regards to video – raw round teh edges but pushing forward and getting it integrated into my marketing and efforts. As you say highly unlikely we will hit those numbers consistently but then again when you consider them just once would do well!!

The commenting plug in I use is called Intense Debate which works like a mini-blogging platform. Forget who it was that recommended it originally but was one of our fellow MWA students. Reminds me that I must do a post on the plug ins that I use at some point…… Speak soon,

      Tom

    Hi Tom

Nearly 77 million views, wow! It just shows the power of video marketing. And the guitar playing was pretty awesome but where was the band hiding – under the bed?! The thought of making a video scares the heck out of me but I think it's about time I took the bull by the horns and gave it a go.

    Good luck with the Challenge.

Thanks for stopping by and pleasure making your acquaintance. Video is indeed a powerful tool, as with everythingthe key is taking action! One tip I've learnt to overcome your fear on early videos is to either do a Camtasia (or equivalent style free screen capture software) video or a powerpoint presentation so you can avoid appearing in front of the camera. This should be enough to get you started but obviously as you develop (and build confidence) you will want to appear in front of the camera to build rapport with your viewers/subscribers. Good luck with it! Tom

    Hi Tom

Wow! 77m views, that's one successful video!

The most views I've had for a video promoting an affiliate product is around 600 and this was part of a campaign that earned me over $2k in commission.

So you don't need millions of views to make worthwhile money!

    Thanks for an inspiring post!

    • Tomharvey

      27/08/2010

Stuart, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts and details of your success – just goes to show how video can be lucrative even with modest viewing figures. Would love to hear more detail about the campaign you ran…. All the best, Tom

    Hi Tom,

At first I thought it might be you playing the guitar as i watched the video first.

Video marketing can be a gold mine indeed if you can get that many views.

I'm tempted to take my guitar out now and start playing.

But seriously, I will be using video within weeks or a month or two.

    Thanks for the post.

    Vance

Vance. Hope you are well – been a while. Sadly not me playing I'm afraid (I'm not the most musical of people!!), got a feeling would take some time to get to that level of proficiency! I'm just dipping my toe into video to add another facet to my business, but video really does excite me as the potential and success of these type of campaigns goes to show what is possible. I would suggest we need to review the Maria Andros call from MWA to get further tips and inspiration – its on my to-do list this weekend in fact!! All the best,

      Tom

    Hi Tom,

They say the simple things are the best and this is a great example of that. It sure seems a perfect and cheap method of traffic generation and one I will have to get involved in.

I shall save your post for reference when my product is ready for lauch, thanks for that.

    Regards,

    Bill

Bill. Thanks for stopping by. I think that video is a key tool to use in your business and products – you should definately incorporate it in your up coming product and launch – would love to know some more details of what you are up to – let me know! As far as another traffic method goes video is great as the number of people visiting sites like YouTube is huge and best of all its free traffic!! Alll the best, Tom

    Hi Tom

This is a great post – very well made. I use video in my internet marketing online business, but not as much as I should.

Not only can a video on YouTube drive traffic to your site (or to someone else's site via your affiliate link), but a video salespage can achieve better results than a long-copy salespage.

And an interesting video on a page can encourage people to stick around to watch it which reduces your bounce rate enhancing Google's impression of your site, e.g. I've come here as part of the 100 Blog Post Challenge but just had to stick around to listen to that video!

I've posted a link to this page on identi.ca for you (makes a change from Twitter!)

Martyn, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the bookmark – much appreciated, will return the favour when I head over to your site. Completely agree with your comments regarding video sales pages as over the past 2 years or so its been interesting to see the usage of video take over on many squeeze pages and sales letters with a number of launches now being based around a video sales page/introduction/presentation. Certainly helps visualise what is possible in addition to reading about the possibilities. Not to mention keeps people hooked for a while longer. Speak soon, Tom

    Hey Tom,

Video has proven to be the monster under the bed. I don't want to do it, I don't want to open myself up for all the world, and I don't want to get out from under the covers I now have for fear I might get caught.

Right now I'm comfortable not doing the video thing, but I know the writing is on the wall. I also know that if I plan on competing, I have to get over this fear.

    Maybe later.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    • Tomharvey

      28/08/2010

Mike, thanks for sharing your honest thoughts and fears/restraints. You could start by doing screen capture videos (using Camtasia or similar free software) or even Powerpoint presentations/slide shows as that would let you get started without opening yourself up to the world. Small steps my friend, always moving forward…. Good luck with it.

    Hi Tom,
Video marketing is a very powerful tool in the internet marketing world It Sells Products better than a sales page without a video although I have not created any video’s as of yet I’ll get there one day. Thanks for the post Tom.

Mike. Thanks for your visit and sharing, indeed video is still a massive growth medium. Over the last 2 years it has been clear to see the growth in squeeze and sales pages using video and evidently the reason for that is that it works!! I would highly recommend adding it to your business. All the best, Tom

Michelle. Thanks for your visit – let me know if you need any tips and/or advice. You can start cheaply using an iphone or flip camera (or most conventional digital cameras will let you shoot video) or you can get free screen capture software and record a video that way. The key is to take action and push forwards. All the best

    Hi Tom
That's an excellent marketing technique. Thanks for posting the ins and outs on it. I may be a ways away from that, but I see the value of it and it will surely keep me curious until I flesh it out.
    Thanks.

    Hi Tom,

I have seen that video before. It is amazing and the power of intrigue it gives to the product.

Video marketing is incredible and I think we are only just in the beginning of seeing the power of it all.

I do believe that if we want to be successful in our online business ventures no matter which are, whether it is with product creation or affiliate marketing video will play an important role and if we are not using video then we need to seriously look at it!

It is on my list of things to learn after this challenge along with list building! So much to do so little time! Oops on that one!

First I actually need to get a video camera and the software to do it! Am a bit slow in that department.

Just had a look at the top ten review site. How cool is that site!! Type in your keyword and they have done top ten reviews on just about everything. I was getting side tracked having a play!!

Hope everything has been going well with the challenge. I have just about finished my blog hopping. I am taking a table as I go around to check on everyone's comments.

    See you back here soon,

    Cheers

    Jacinta :D

      Jacinta

Finally got round to approving and replying to all the comments. Thanks for your input, as you say video is key to whatever avenue or direction that your business takes, in my opinion its just too important to overlook given the sheer volume of traffic and the authority that Google gives to videos.

Glad you liked the review site – check out my latest post on Twitter for another killer free search resource!! Speak soon
